Dawson

For the first time since we got on the plane for Asia all those weeks ago, I spend the day playing video games.

All day, from when Claudine leaves for work and Mom shuffles out with her cane. The wheelchair is the last resort, and I always feel hopeful when she doesn’t need to use it.

I take my big bowl of the sugary cereal that Claudine buys for me, hiding it in the top cupboards, far from Mom’s reach, and eat it on my bed/couch. I don’t get dressed. I don’t even have a shower and have the bedhead to prove it.

I play games all day.

First Fortnite, checking in with fellow gamers and fans who are online. Mike is there, and it’s back to normal, interacting via games with him. Might take a little longer in real life, but there’s hope.

I still haven’t talked to Neely about Mom and Mike and because of that, there’s an ache deep inside me, like I ate too much cereal. I haven’t talked to her about anything since her ‘date’ with Grayson, and when I saw her Wednesday, I annoyed her with my comments.

I can’t seem to keep my thoughts about him, and them, to myself.

It doesn’t help when I keep replaying what Mike said about her like a favourite record.

When I was twelve, one of my buddies told me Pasha Patel liked me. Before that, I’d never looked twice at the girl, and only knew her as quiet and smart with long black hair. That news was followed up by one of Pasha’s friends telling me Pasha thought I was the cutest boy in grade six. And then a random girl in the class told me Pasha was staring at me all through math.

Of course, by the next morning, I was madly in love with Pasha Patel.

Ever since Mike told me Neely had a thing for me, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about her.

Of course that doesn’t mean when I’m destroying a world.

I take a break for more food around one o’clock, sitting cross-legged on the couch with a sandwich in one hand and the controller in the other as I battle an army of zombies, happy beyond belief. There’s nothing on my mind other than my avatar fighting for his life—not Neely, not Shae, not my mom and Mike—and I like it that way.

Of course, it doesn’t last.

The knock comes a few hours after I last ate, just when I’m feeling the need for something else, and wondering when Mom and Claudine will be back. I get killed before I manage to pause the game, so whoever is at the door already has a strike against them.

Strike two if they’re selling something, although it’s not common that we have salespeople wandering inside the apartment building.

In fact, the intercom usually buzzes to announce a visitor.

I open the door with a scowl, only to have it quickly wiped from my face. “Natasha,” I say with surprise. “What are you doing here?”

“It’s nice to see you too.
